Fine Art Auctioneer
"You're playing conductor — telling the room we're going to speed this up a little bit. Now, we're going to pause a second. We're going to be quiet over here. The gavel is the baton."
— Tash Perrin · Christie's Deputy Chairman & Senior Auctioneer ·
🌐The World of Auction Houses
Most people picture a glamorous evening sale at Christie's or Sotheby's — a room full of billionaires, a Picasso on the wall, a magnetic auctioneer commanding the crowd. That is part of the story. But auction houses are vast institutions, and the auctioneer is just one role in a complex world of specialists, valuers, client advisors, and scholars.

🔍What is a Fine Art Auctioneer?
A fine art auctioneer is the person standing at the rostrum — the raised podium at the front of a sale room — who conducts the live auction. In three to four hours, they might move hundreds of millions of dollars of artwork, simultaneously managing bids from the room, the telephones, and online. They must count fast, read the room, build suspense, release tension, and project complete authority — all at the same time.
What's less obvious: most auctioneers at the major houses are not primarily auctioneers. They are first specialists in a particular area of art — Impressionism, Contemporary Art, Old Masters, Jewellery — and they conduct auctions in addition to their main role as scholar, adviser and relationship manager. The most celebrated auctioneers spent decades building deep expertise before they ever stood at a rostrum.
What Happens in a Sale Room ·
The Auctioneer ·
Stands at the rostrum. Controls the entire room. Manages the pace, the drama, and the final hammer. Their "book" lists every lot with its estimate and reserve price.
Phone Bidders ·
Specialists line the walls holding phones — relaying bids from major collectors who are not in the room. Often anonymous. A single phone bid can change everything.
Room Bidders ·
Use numbered paddles to bid. Some are private collectors; many are dealers bidding on behalf of clients. The room dynamic — who bids, who hesitates — is information the auctioneer reads in real time.
Online Bidders ·
The newest addition — now often 30–40% of all bids come via online platforms. An auctioneer must track the screen showing online bids while simultaneously managing the room and the phones.
🌱How Does This Career Help Society?
Auction houses are cultural institutions as much as commercial ones. They are the places where the financial value of art is publicly established — not just for billionaire collectors, but for museums calculating insurance values, estates settling inheritances, and scholars documenting cultural heritage. When Sotheby's sells a Klimt for $108 million in London, it signals to the entire world what that artist's legacy is worth.
Major auctioneers also use their platforms for significant charitable work. Simon de Pury has raised billions for causes including AIDS research (amfAR) and environmental organisations. Helena Newman has championed women in the art world. When Christie's sold a record-breaking $450 million Leonardo da Vinci, the proceeds went partly to cultural institutions. The best in this profession see themselves not just as salespeople, but as custodians of culture.
☀️A Day in the Life — During Sale Week
09:00
Morning briefing with the sale team. Review the "book" for tonight's evening sale — 45 lots, total estimate £85–120 million. Go through each lot: who are the likely bidders? Which lots might spark a bidding war? Where might competition be thin? The auctioneer needs to know the story of every object.
10:30
Phone calls with major collectors attending tonight. Build rapport, understand their intentions — not to manipulate, but to gauge interest so you can manage expectations. A collector who wanted Lot 12 has just dropped out. You note this. It will affect how you pace that lot tonight.
14:00
Rehearsal and voice warm-up. Auctioneers run through the sale mentally and sometimes physically — practising the cadence, the numbers, the pauses. Top auctioneers have their own vocal technique. Helena Newman describes it as "conducting a musical performance."
17:30
The sale room fills. You dress carefully — Helena Newman wears Victoria Beckham for major evening sales, carefully choosing colours that complement the works. Simon de Pury is known for his dapper pocket squares. The appearance of authority and elegance is part of the performance.
19:00
You walk to the rostrum. The room goes quiet. Three hours of pure focus: you count bids in three currencies simultaneously, scan faces for hesitation, make split-second decisions about when to pause and when to push, deliver the hammer with finality. Lot 12 opens at £2 million. The telephone bidder — Paris — pushes it to £3.8 million. The room is silent. You wait. "At £3.8 million, then." Gavel falls.
22:30
Post-sale debrief. The total was £94 million — above the estimate. Three world records broken. You are elated and exhausted simultaneously. Tomorrow: back to your day job as head of Impressionist and Modern Art, advising collectors, travelling to see collections, preparing consignments for the next sale.
🤝Who You Work With通常和誰一起工作

The most important relationship is with the major collectors — the handful of individuals who might spend $10–50 million in a single evening. These are long-term relationships built over decades. When Simon de Pury says he has helped raise "several billion dollars" for charity through auctions, he means he called those collectors personally. The gavel is the end of a conversation that started years earlier.
💰Social Status & Salary by Region

🎻
Helena Newman (born c. 1967)
Chairman of Sotheby's Europe and Worldwide Head of Impressionist and Modern Art. Holds a Master's degree in Modern Languages (French and German) from Magdalen College, Oxford. Trained as a classical violinist — she plays with a family string quartet, and her musicianship directly shapes her auctioning style: pace, tempo, silence. In 2016, she became the first woman to take a major evening sale since 1990. She is the only woman in history to have auctioned two separate artworks for more than $100 million. In 2023, she sold Klimt's Woman with the Fan for $108 million in London — the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction in Europe. Her philosophy: "Performing on the rostrum in front of an audience is very much like conducting a musical performance."

Simon de Pury (born 1951)
Born into a Swiss noble family in Basel. Began his career wanting to be an artist — studied Japanese painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Unable to break into galleries, he pivoted to auctioneering, joining Sotheby's in 1974. He rose to become Chairman of Sotheby's Europe. Called "the Mick Jagger of the art world" for his extraordinary energy and charisma on the rostrum, he can conduct auctions fluently in five languages: English, French, German, Italian, and Russian. He has helped raise several billion dollars for charity over his career. He acquired the auction house Phillips and turned it into a challenger to the Christie's-Sotheby's duopoly, making it a world leader in contemporary art. He is also a DJ, photographer and collector. He makes cameo appearances in Emily in Paris on Netflix.

Perhaps the world's most famous living auctioneer. Joined Christie's in the late 1980s and rose through the ranks to become Global President. Has sold more art above $100 million than any auctioneer in history — including the $450 million Leonardo da Vinci Salvator Mundi in 2017 (the most expensive artwork ever sold), and Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled for $110.5 million in 2017. He travels with his gavel in his hand luggage. Famous for his ability to build tension, pace bidding wars, and extract extraordinary prices from rooms. Once described as "the last authority in the room — everything stops when Jussi raises the hammer."

How to Become a Fine Art Auctioneer
1
Study Art History, History, Languages, or a related humanities subject at university. Helena Newman studied Modern Languages at Oxford. Jussi Pylkkänen studied History of Art. Deep subject knowledge is the foundation.
2
Consider the Sotheby's Institute of Art (London, New York) — a postgraduate programme specifically for the art market. Christie's Education offers similar. These are the direct pathways in.

Start as a junior specialist or cataloguer. Do not enter expecting to auctioneer — earn your expertise first. Most auctioneers spend 10+ years as specialists before taking the rostrum.
4
Push to train as an auctioneer. Christie's and Sotheby's have internal training programmes. "People are either glazed over or say 'I'm in, hook, line and sinker.'" — Tash Perrin. You have to want it visibly.
——Tash Perrin。
5
Build a track record. Start with smaller day sales, develop your style, then work towards the prestigious evening sales. Helena Newman waited decades before her first major evening auction. Georgina Hilton made history at age 25.
