The World of Actuaries
Most people think actuaries work only in insurance. The reality is that anywhere there is financial risk and uncertainty — insurance, government, climate science, pensions, finance — there is an actuary. Today we explore the Insurance Actuary: the original and most common path. But this is only one branch of a much bigger tree.

What is an Insurance Actuary?
An insurance actuary is a professional who answers one fundamental question: how much should it cost to protect against something bad happening? Whether it's a life insurance policy (what premium should a 35-year-old non-smoker pay?), a health insurance plan (how much will this population's medical bills cost next year?), or car insurance (given this driver's history and location, how likely are they to crash?) — the actuary builds the mathematical models that make insurance financially possible.
The insurance industry is built entirely on the work of actuaries. Without accurate pricing, an insurance company either charges too much (losing customers to competitors) or too little (going bankrupt when claims exceed reserves). The actuary is the person who gets that number right — using probability theory, demographic data, mortality tables, and increasingly, machine learning.
Actuaries are consistently ranked as one of the top careers globally — combining high salary, excellent job security, intellectual challenge, and meaningful work. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 22% job growth for actuaries between 2024 and 2034 — far faster than the average for all occupations. In a world of increasing risk (climate change, aging populations, pandemics), actuaries have never been more needed.
How Does This Career Help Society?
Insurance is the invisible infrastructure of modern society. When a typhoon destroys a factory, insurance keeps the company alive. When someone develops cancer at 40, health insurance means they don't have to choose between treatment and bankruptcy. When the breadwinner of a family dies, life insurance means the children can still go to school. None of this works without actuaries getting the numbers right.
Actuaries also have an ethical dimension that is often underappreciated. They are the people who ensure insurance companies don't promise more than they can deliver — protecting policyholders from insurer insolvency. They are also involved in questions of fairness: should a young woman in a safe profession pay less for life insurance than an older man in a hazardous job? These are partly mathematical questions, and partly moral ones. Actuaries sit right at that boundary.
The Actuary's Exam Ladder
Unlike most professions, becoming a fully qualified actuary requires passing a series of notoriously difficult professional exams — while working full-time. The exams are administered by actuarial societies (the Society of Actuaries in the US, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK) and take on average 7–10 years to complete. Each exam passed typically results in a salary increase. This makes the path unusual: you are paid to study.
The Path to Fellowship ·
Exam P
Probability — the mathematical foundation. The first exam most students sit, often before graduating university.
Exam FM
Financial Mathematics — interest rates, bonds, derivatives. The "money" exam.
Exam FAM
Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics — starts to bring probability into real insurance contexts.
ASA
Associate of the Society of Actuaries — after passing a set of foundational exams. Most actuaries reach this level within 3–5 years. Major salary milestone.
FSA
Fellow of the Society of Actuaries — the highest qualification. Requires specialisation in one track (life, health, pensions, finance, etc.) and typically 7–10 years total. Fully qualified actuaries at this level hold significant professional authority.
A Day in the Life保險精算師的一天
08:30
Morning data review. A batch of updated mortality data has come in from the government statistical office. You load it into your model and check whether your life insurance pricing assumptions still hold. They do — mostly. One age group shows a slightly higher-than-expected death rate. You flag it for investigation.
10:00
Pricing meeting with the product team. They want to launch a new critical illness rider (a policy that pays out if the customer is diagnosed with cancer, heart attack, or stroke). You present three pricing scenarios, each with different assumptions about claim rates and medical inflation. The product director asks: "Which one do you recommend?" You explain the trade-offs.
13:00
Study lunch. You're preparing for the next actuarial exam. You eat at your desk, working through practice problems in the cafeteria. This is a common reality for actuaries in their first 5 years: the exams don't stop when you start working.
14:30
Reserve calculation review. Once a year, your team must certify to the regulator that the company holds sufficient reserves — money set aside to pay future claims. You review the reserve methodology document. A new international accounting standard has changed how certain liabilities must be valued. You calculate the impact: NTD 340 million adjustment required.
16:00
Junior actuary mentoring. You review a junior colleague's work on a motor insurance pricing model. Their approach is technically correct but misses a real-world nuance: the data has a selection bias they haven't accounted for. You explain it. This is one of the best parts of the job.
17:30
Board presentation preparation. Next week you present your annual mortality experience analysis to the Board. You simplify the technical findings into clear language and visuals. The Board doesn't need to understand the math — they need to understand the business implications. Translation: the hardest skill.
Who You Work With通常和誰一起工作
Actuaries sit at the intersection of mathematics, business, and regulation. They work with a surprisingly diverse range of people — and the ability to translate complex mathematics into plain language for non-technical stakeholders is one of the most valued skills in the profession.

Edmond Halley (1656–1742)
Yes — the same Halley as Halley's Comet. In 1693, the English astronomer published one of the first actuarial life tables in history: an analysis of birth and death records from the city of Breslau, Poland. His paper showed how to calculate the probability of a person of any given age surviving to another age — the mathematical foundation of all life insurance. Halley didn't do this because he cared about insurance; he was trying to understand human mortality. But his work accidentally created an entire industry. The comet is famous. The life table may have been more important.

Florence Nightingale (1820–1910)
Famous as the founder of modern nursing — but she was also a pioneering statistician whose methods overlap significantly with actuarial science. After returning from the Crimean War in 1858, she published a landmark statistical report on mortality in the British Army, using charts and data visualisations that had never been used before. She discovered that in peacetime, soldiers died at twice the rate of civilians — from preventable sanitary conditions. She used data to save lives. The actuarial profession cites her as a pioneer. She was the first female member of the Royal Statistical Society.

Franz Kafka (1883–1924)
One of the greatest writers of the 20th century — author of The Metamorphosis, The Trial, and The Castle — spent his days working as an insurance executive at the Workers' Accident Insurance Institute in Prague. He handled claims, wrote reports, and performed work that would today be considered actuarial. He is said to have been excellent at his job. He wrote his literature at night. The combination of bureaucratic insurance work and existential literary imagination produced some of the strangest, most influential fiction in the Western canon. "Kafkaesque" became a word. His day job may have been the inspiration.

Warren Buffett (born 1930)
The world's most famous investor almost became an actuary. In 1951, at age 21, he visited GEICO Insurance Company and met a vice president who showed him the actuarial side of the business. He was so impressed with the predictability of insurance cash flows that he sold everything he owned and bought 350 shares of GEICO. He has since made insurance the backbone of Berkshire Hathaway's empire — famously describing insurance float as "free money." Today Berkshire Hathaway owns GEICO, General Re, and numerous other insurance companies. The world's greatest investor built his fortune on actuarial principles.
